Kale - Nero Di Toscana

Kale – Nero Di Toscana

Brassica oleracea var. sabellica

A striking kale with its wrinkled dark green to black leaves. It has an upright structure, enjoys cool climates and has improved flavour after frost. This makes an impressive ingredient for the garden chef and is packed full of nutrients.

Sow at 7mm deep; Plant spacing at 20cm; Rows at 45-50cm apart; Germination period 4 to 7 days; Soil temperatures between 8˚C and 30˚C; Harvest time approx. 7-9 weeks.

Kale can be sown direct in the garden, or in seed trays and planted out in 4 to 6 weeks. Prefers full sun and well drained, rich soil, but tolerates poor soils. Best results are achieved with the addition of added compost or manure prior to planting, also lime. Frost develops the flavour, and harvesting can be done leaf by leaf as needed, or the entire plant. Young leaves can be eaten raw, and older leaves are best cooked.
