Kale – Red Russian

Kale Red Russian is a real gardeners favourite. A large kale up to 75cm with generous sized grey/green leaves and reddish stems. It is surprisingly tender and excels in cool conditions, becoming sweeter when exposed to frost.

Season – autumn; Sow at 7mm deep; Plant spacing at 20cm; Rows at 45-50cm apart; Germination period 4 to 7 days; Soil temperatures between 8˚C and 30˚C; Harvest time approx. 7-9 weeks.

An excellent heirloom, Red Russian kale can be sown direct in the garden, or in seed trays and planted out in 4 to 6 weeks. Prefers full sun and well drained, rich soil, but tolerates poor soils. Best results are achieved with the addition of added compost or manure prior to planting, also lime. Frost develops the flavour, and harvesting can be done leaf by leaf as needed, or the entire plant. Young leaves can be eaten raw, and older leaves are best cooked.
