Lazy Housewife Bean

Phaseolus vulgaris

Originating from 1810, the Lazy Housewife bean is the classic and possibly original string-less bean. Its name comes from the prolific, easy to grow nature and delicious flavour. A climbing green bean with 20cm pods.

Sow 2-5cm deep; Plant spacing at 10-20cm; Germination period between 8- 10 days; Soil temperatures between 16˚C and 30˚C; Harvest time approx. 9 to 11 weeks.

Beans are best sown direct and do not like to be transplanted. Sow after all danger of frost has passed, and beware germination rates are slowed if temperatures are low. Construct a support of trellis, teepee or pole before sowing to avoid root damage, supports must be between 1.5 to 3 metres in height.  Beans enjoy full sun and even moisture. For successive cropping, sow more seeds when beans start to flower. Regular harvesting will increase yield.
