Chilli – Jalapeño

A very popular medium heat chilli with thick walled green skin which turns red on maturity. Can be eaten when either red or green. A Mexican favourite, this chilli can be used in salsas, tacos, burritos, nachos and a is generally a great addition to spice up any dish.

Sow 6mm deep in seed trays; Plant out in 4-6 weeks; Plant spacing at 20-35cm; Germination period between 7 and 10 days; Soil temperatures between 18˚C and 35˚C; Harvest time approx. 10-12 weeks.

Chilli plants, similar to capsicums, are best sown in small seed trays and planted out when 10-12cm tall. Seedlings are best housed in a greenhouse or sheltered position and planted out when weather warms. Chilli plants are frost tender and need warmth to produce the rich, ripe, red colour. Too much nitrogen in the soil can produce lush growth but fewer fruits. When harvesting hot chillies, it is best to wear gloves!
